~1M on XEuro Pacific Capital chief economistSchiffGold owner

The most-quoted bear in crypto. Schiff called the 2008 housing crash, has spent fifteen years calling Bitcoin worthless, and sells gold for a living. We track him for the same reason we track the bulls: he posts dated, specific, checkable opinions — and a market needs its sceptic on the record too.

Real name Peter David SchiffFocus Gold · macro · anti-BitcoinVentures Euro Pacific · SchiffGoldBase United States

In short. Peter Schiff is a stockbroker, gold dealer and permanent bear who built his name on an early, correct call on the 2008 housing collapse and has been arguing ever since that the dollar, the bond market and Bitcoin are all headed for the same cliff. He runs the precious-metals dealer SchiffGold, is chief economist and global strategist of Euro Pacific Capital, and owns the fund company Euro Pacific Asset Management — so his recommended alternative, physical gold and silver, is also his business. On Bitcoin he is not a trader but a standing short thesis: sell it, it is going far lower, buy metals instead. In this window that thesis was early in a way that cost money: he was loudest within 4% of the cycle bottom. But it also went his way twice just before the chart starts.

Background — the 2008 call, the gold book, and fifteen years against Bitcoin

Schiff began as a stockbroker at Shearson Lehman Brothers and in 1996 bought the small brokerage he renamed Euro Pacific Capital, running it until he sold it in 2017 — it became Alliance Global Partners, where he stayed on as chief economist and global strategist — while building his own fund company, Euro Pacific Asset Management. His reputation rests on one very good call: through 2006–07 he argued on US television that the housing market and the banks financing it were about to break, and in 2008 they did. The clips made him famous and earned the nickname Dr. Doom. He built the rest of his career on that thesis — books (Crash Proof), a daily podcast, and a precious-metals dealership, SchiffGold, that sells the exact asset he recommends.

Two things belong on the record next to the 2008 call. First, the bearishness never switched off: the dollar collapse and hyperinflation he has forecast repeatedly since 2009 have not arrived, and he has called Bitcoin a bubble at roughly every price from $1,000 upward. Second, in June 2022 Puerto Rico's financial regulator (OCIF) shut down his Euro Pacific International Bank, citing capital deficiencies, following a multi-country tax-enforcement investigation known as Operation Atlantis; no charges were announced against Schiff, the bank or its staff, and Schiff has since sued the IRS alleging the closure was engineered. He also lost access to his own Bitcoin wallet in 2020, and his son Spencer publicly went 100% into Bitcoin in 2021 — a family argument he has conducted in public ever since.

Trading style & philosophy

Top-down, permanently defensive. Schiff is not a chartist and does not trade the calls he broadcasts — he argues a single macro case (debt, deficits, an over-valued dollar, a Federal Reserve that will always choose inflation) and derives everything from it. Bitcoin, in that frame, is not money but the purest risk asset: it should fall hardest when equities crack, and it competes with gold for the same hard-money bid. The strengths are consistency and a genuine 2008 hit. The weakness is that a thesis with no exit gives no timing: he is often directionally early by years, which for anyone acting on it is indistinguishable from being wrong.

About as bearish as the register goes on Bitcoin, and has been for over a decade. He is structurally bullish on one thing only — physical gold and silver — which he also sells.

Track record — his calls, charted

Dated, verbatim posts and quotes from Schiff, charted against real price. He is a one-direction commentator, so we grade him the way you would grade a standing short: ok if Bitcoin is now below the price he said it at, warn if a drawdown of 15% or more followed but price has since round-tripped above him, bad if price is above him and the fall he described never showed up. On that rule this window is unkind: his loudest post came within 4% of the exact cycle low. Two honest counterweights, both outside the chart window and both right: on 17 Dec 2025 he wrote “Before a U.S. dollar crash, we will likely get a Bitcoin crash.” with BTC near $79.6k, and on 1–2 Jan 2026 he told viewers to “get rid of your Bitcoin above $87,000.” Bitcoin has not traded at $87k since. The window starting 30 Jan flatters him less than his actual year.

“Sell Bitcoin now!”

Said at $66,427, with an explicit instruction to sell. Bitcoin did fall — but only to $58,566 (−11.8%), which is 17% above the $50k he called likely; $20k was never in sight. It then rallied to $82,018 and sits at $79,810, +20.1% above where he said sell. Right that a dip was coming, wrong on every number and wrong on the trade.

Said at $70,661. Anyone who sold got paid for a while: BTC fell 17.1% to $58,566 over the next eleven weeks. Then it came all the way back — $79,810 now, +12.9% above his level. A real drawdown followed, so we log this open rather than against; whether the swap into metals beat holding is a separate question we do not chart here.

His sarcasm — gold up 9%, silver 11%, the NASDAQ 13%, the Russell 2,000 14%, Bitcoin down 11% on the year — landed at $80,025, within 2.5% of the highest Bitcoin traded after it. What followed was a −26.8% slide to $58,566, and at $79,810 BTC is still 0.3% below where he wrote it. His single best in-window call, and he made it at the top.

Said at $71,320, with the target spelled out: break $50K, then “a quick fall below $20K.” The first half worked — BTC fell another 17.9% to $58,566 on 1 Jul, so he was correct that the bottom was not in. From there Bitcoin ran +30.9% to $79,810, where it stands today — +30.9% above him. This is the definition of capitulation-bait: maximum bearishness at the bottom.

Said at $63,701 during a tech-stock rout, on the theory that Bitcoin is high-beta and should fall hardest. It did the opposite almost immediately: the deepest dip after this post was −1.5%, and BTC then climbed 25.3% to $79,810, where it stands today — +25.3% above him. A new line of attack: AI competes with Bitcoin for speculative capital, electricity and data-centre capacity, and a powerful enough model might find flaws in its cryptography. The resource argument is at least testable; the code-vulnerability part comes with no specific flaw named. Four days old at $77,081, BTC +3.5% since — far too early to grade, so we log it open.

Outcomes are our read of his stated bias against real price, not his own scoring. Every quote below is verbatim — X posts captured from the post's own text and date, article quotes confirmed on the page before use. The named levels matter: he repeatedly staked the thesis on Bitcoin breaking $50,000 on the way to $20,000. In this window the low was $58,566 — the $50k break never happened. Near-term marks can flip.

How he makes money — and where the conflicts are

Schiff is the rare commentator whose conflict is fully in the open: he tells you to sell Bitcoin and buy gold, and he owns a gold dealership. That does not make him wrong — it does mean the recommendation and the revenue line are the same sentence.

SchiffGold (precious metals)

He owns a physical gold and silver dealership. Every sell-Bitcoin-buy-metals post points at a product he sells — the clearest direct incentive of anyone in this database.

Euro Pacific Asset Management

His fund company, plus the chief-economist-and-global-strategist role at Euro Pacific Capital (sold in 2017, now a division of Alliance Global Partners). Both are built around the same foreign-equity and hard-asset thesis he argues publicly.

Straight answers

Who is Peter Schiff?+

An American stockbroker, gold dealer and economic commentator, nicknamed Dr. Doom. He runs the precious-metals dealer SchiffGold, is chief economist and global strategist of Euro Pacific Capital and owns Euro Pacific Asset Management, and is best known for warning on US television in 2006–07 that the housing market and the banks financing it would collapse — which they did in 2008.

Has Peter Schiff ever been right about Bitcoin?+

Yes, and this page shows it. On 17 Dec 2025 he warned a Bitcoin crash would precede a dollar crash, with BTC near $79.6k; on 1 Jan 2026 he told viewers to get rid of Bitcoin above $87,000 — it has not traded there since. Inside our chart window his 8 May 2026 post landed within 2.5% of the top, ahead of a 26.8% fall. His problem is not direction, it is timing and magnitude: he was equally loud 3.9% from the low.

What is Peter Schiff's net worth?+

Not publicly verified. Published estimates vary widely and none is confirmed by Schiff or by a filing — treat any specific figure you see as guesswork. His income comes from SchiffGold, Euro Pacific Asset Management, his Euro Pacific Capital role, books and media.

Why does Peter Schiff hate Bitcoin?+

He argues money must have non-monetary use value, which gold has and Bitcoin does not, and that Bitcoin behaves as a high-beta risk asset rather than a hedge. Note the incentive alongside the argument: he sells the alternative. He also lost access to his own Bitcoin wallet in 2020, and his son Spencer went 100% into Bitcoin in 2021.

Should I trade against Peter Schiff?+

Treating him as a reliable inverse signal is as lazy as following him blindly, and this window shows why: he was right at the May top and wrong at the June low, four days apart in tone. He is a commentator with an open conflict of interest, not an adviser. Read the dated record above and decide for yourself.

How much do you trade like him?
