Russian Importers Turn to USDT to Bypass Banking Limits in China Trade

In cross-border trade with China, USDT has emerged as something of a game changer for Russian importers, a way to get around banking restrictions and onerous compliance that would otherwise impede business. It is a mechanism that is changing how payments are made, with fewer fees and less time wasted.

Why Russian Importers Are Choosing USDT

Pro Blockchain Media Live reports that more and more Russian importers are turning to USDT for their dealings with Chinese partners. One does not have to look far for the reason: Chinese banks are under pressure from tighter regulations and are wary of secondary sanctions, so it is not uncommon for them to return a payment from Russia and cause weeks of delay. To have instant cross-border payments without the need for correspondent banks, companies have taken up Tether’s stablecoin.

The Hong Kong and Dubai Payment Route

The host of Pro Blockchain Media Live describes a typical way of working around the system: have the payment routed via Hong Kong or Dubai. A Russian importer will put funds into USDT, pass them on to an intermediary in one of those cities, and settle with a Chinese supplier. It is straightforward and spares the importer from high fees and the protracted vetting of conventional banks.

Adoption Among Russian Metallurgists and Supplier Incentives

One sees this with major metallurgical operations in Russia as well as smaller firms when they settle with the Chinese side. There is an appeal to the lower costs and immediacy; some suppliers will offer a 7% discount and make it clear there are no taxes to be paid in Hong Kong. Yet Pro Blockchain Media Live points out the legal ambiguity of such incentives. In arranging a deal to sidestep tax, a company may be flouting local or international law.

Regulatory Changes and Ongoing Risks

For all its popularity among Russian importers, the rules are in flux. Russia is set to formally permit cryptocurrency in foreign trade contracts under currency control from 1 September 2026. In the interim, importers make do with informal platforms and intermediaries in Dubai where oversight is lacking. That can leave a business open to fraud or the loss of money, not to mention running afoul of Russian or international regulations.
