DFINITY Founder Accuses NEAR of Copying Technology

The blockchain world has been abuzz with controversy after DFINITY’s Dominic Williams put NEAR on the spot for what he says is an appropriation of proprietary cryptography. In public statements, the DFINITY founder has laid bare some of the crypto ecosystem’s more basic concerns over integrity and innovation.

Williams’s Allegations: Technology and Integrity in Question

Williams has gone on record to allege that NEAR Protocol has appropriated DFINITY’s cryptographic technology. He contends that the confidential intents at NEAR are only as trustworthy as the operators behind them, which in his view undermines the trustless nature of their privacy offerings. Williams also claims NEAR has been making use of DFINITY’s chain signatures and NIR intents for the better part of two and a half years, and he has suggested that a former DFINITY staffer could have been instrumental in transferring that intellectual property.

Such allegations are bound to ruffle feathers in the crypto community given how competitive the terrain is and the sensitivities around intellectual property. With his challenge to NEAR’s technology, Williams has opened up a wider conversation on what should be expected in terms of originality and transparency from major blockchain projects.

Market Standing: NEAR and ICP by the Numbers

For its part, NEAR is not letting the dispute get in the way of its market standing. Valued at around $6.4 billion, it is more than four times the size of the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) at $1.5 billion. The disparity is even starker in terms of Total Value Locked: $230 million for NEAR versus ICP’s $8 million. And when it comes to daily active addresses, NEAR boasts numbers in excess of 50,000 compared to ICP’s 4,000.

Then again, ICP has proved resilient on-chain of late. Over the course of a week it pulled in $103,000 in revenue from the chain, well over three times NEAR’s $32,500 even though the latter has the edge in market cap and adoption. One could interpret these figures as evidence that ICP’s ecosystem is generating more value per transaction or user.

Ecosystem Strategies: Enterprise and Cross-Chain Solutions

Strategic priorities tell the story of the divide between the two. ICP is advancing its Caffeine AI platform and Cloud Engines with an eye on the enterprise computing and AI infrastructure business, making it a candidate to underpin sophisticated dApps and AI services. NEAR has taken a different approach with Near Business, a cross-chain payment platform meant to serve any company wanting to integrate with the blockchain without hassle. In this way, both are carving out their own advantages while questions about the origin of the technology are still being discussed.
