Crypto Industry Faces $766 Million in Hacks: September Sees Record Losses

The crypto sector saw its hack losses climb to $766 million in September 2023, a 462% jump from the figures in August. Making it the worst month for such losses to date this year, the data points to an accelerating wave of cybercrime aimed at exchanges and blockchain projects.

A Record-Breaking Month for Crypto Hacks

PeckShield has recorded 55 major attacks that account for the $766 million in damages, numbers that put any prior record to shame. Incrypted cites these findings as evidence of a heightened risk environment for digital asset platforms. The channel also attributes the steep increase from August to the magnitude of some high-profile breaches, seeing it as a sign of more advanced attackers taking advantage of ongoing vulnerabilities in crypto infrastructure.

Major Incidents: BitGet and Liquid Network Breaches

Two major events were responsible for more than 90 percent of the losses recorded in September. Foremost among them was the attack on the BitGet exchange that put $388 million at risk. Even so, BitGet has been quick to reassure users, insisting that client balances are secure and the impact on its platform is negligible.

Then there was the incident with Liquid Network, where about $320 million in bitcoin was taken. Incrypted reports point to a protocol error in PoElements as the probable cause. While 3,400 bitcoins have since been recovered, amounting to roughly $268 million and softening the blow somewhat, it is clear that better protections are needed.

Implications for Cybersecurity in the Crypto Sector

The crypto industry’s hack losses have been making headlines for all the wrong reasons, and in the wake of these record numbers there is a louder demand for better security on blockchain platforms. The Incrypted team has put it plainly: the sheer frequency and magnitude of such attacks lay bare the sector’s vulnerabilities and make a case for more forceful, forward-thinking defenses.

One need only look at how a handful of major incidents have accounted for so much of the damage to see how a single weakness can ripple out with serious effect. With the stability of the industry and the confidence of its users on the line, exchanges and those behind the protocols will have to make risk management and security overhauls a top priority from here on out.
