Since coming to market, the Athena USDE stablecoin has put in a strong showing, racking up about $1 billion in real fees. The project is making waves in both crypto and traditional finance with the prospect of a buyback program and its presence on BlackRock’s Aladdin platform.
BlackRock Integration and Explosive Fee Growth
Lark Davis of Athena will tell you that the more than $1 billion in fees generated since inception are genuine, not emissions or tokens on paper. It is an indication of the demand for the stablecoin in what is a highly competitive field. Then there is the matter of BlackRock’s Aladdin, home to over $20 trillion in assets; it has been integrated with Athena USDE. In the words of Davis, this puts the stablecoin before a large institutional audience and shows that the traditional finance side has confidence in the project.
Upcoming Buyback Mechanism to Benefit EMA Holders
The ecosystem has another development in the works: a buyback mechanism to be put in place when 7.5 billion USDE tokens are in circulation. Gross revenue to the tune of 5% will go to the Athenian Foundation, which Davis says will put 95% of it to work buying EMA tokens on the open market. Should USDE issuance reach $100 billion, one could see annual buybacks in excess of $1 billion, something Standard Chartered Bank has taken note of in commencing coverage and setting bullish targets.
Athena Pay Expansion and Regulatory Headwinds
With the self-custodial app Athena Pay on Avalanche, the company is extending its reach in the real world. Some 48 countries are in scope for the rollout, and Davis sees this as the way to make USDE a mainstream payment vehicle, with an eye on Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. But he is also quick to flag the risks, not least from regulators and the demands of execution with Athena Pay. Compliance or adoption hiccups would have a dampening effect on the growth of USDE supply and the buybacks that follow.
Market Outlook and Analyst Recommendations
Standard Chartered has long-term targets for the stablecoin that are anything but conservative. For his part, Davis makes a case for buying EMA in a recent video, touting the chance for Athena to be the first synthetic dollar to be used for payments on any scale. He argues that the opportunity is very much asymmetric if the projected growth holds and multi-billion-dollar buybacks materialize. Yet he does not let viewers forget the risks involved; how well it is executed will be of paramount importance.
