Coinbase reported a net income of $718.7 million, an impressive figure driven in large part by $715 million in gains on its crypto investments. But the numbers tell a more revealing tale of the exchange’s dependence on a fickle market than the headline profit might suggest.
Crypto Gains Eclipse Operating Income
The Wolf Of All Streets has been highlighting the latest report, from which it is apparent that just $3 million of that total can be attributed to operating activities at the core of the business. Nearly all of the rest has come from the company’s digital assets appreciating in value, as opposed to trading fees or similar sources. One could hardly overstate what this means: for now, Coinbase is deriving the bulk of its earnings from being a holder of crypto, not as a trading platform.
Bear Market Pressures Exchange Revenues
In the current bear market, revenues are down for exchanges of Coinbase’s caliber. The hosts of The Wolf Of All Streets noted how reduced activity from users in prediction and other niche markets has affected the platform’s operating income. It is a trend seen elsewhere, but the company’s results make for a particularly acute example.
Market Dependency Raises Future Questions
Should there be no strong rally in the market, the report suggests the profits would be unrecognizable; they are a function of the increased value of the firm’s holdings, not of new products or a surge in trading. The analysts on the show were quick to point out the opportunities and risks for shareholders in such a pronounced reliance on asset appreciation. A downturn or even a standstill in crypto prices would see the net income drop. In the end, with or without the boost from valuations, these are figures that will have the industry debating the longevity of the kind of profits Coinbase has displayed.
