Greenberg Sues Trump for Alleged $2.5B Illegal Crypto Activities

With a lawsuit alleging $2.5 billion in unlawful crypto dealings, Benjamin Greenberg has made his case against Trump for constitutional violations and the receipt of illicit profits from foreign states. The suit, brought by the Circle veteran, is one that may have repercussions for the wider crypto industry.

Allegations of Constitutional Violations and Foreign Gains

Greenberg, instrumental in the early days of Circle, says former president Donald Trump has flouted the Constitution by taking material benefits from the United Arab Emirates without approval from Congress. Under the Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution, as the Incrypted channel makes clear, the lawsuit focuses on what it describes as financial windfalls to Trump from foreign governments.

The filing highlights an incident in which half of the World Liberty Finance project was put on the market to parties with ties to the UAE ruling family for $500 million, all in the run-up to Trump’s 2017 inauguration. In Greenberg’s account, the deal was a violation of the law and a means for foreign powers to exert influence on U.S. policy through cryptocurrency.

Stablecoin Schemes and Alleged Unfair Competition

Then there is the matter of the USD1 stablecoin, which the UAE has used for $2 billion in state investments in the Binance exchange. Greenberg contends that using stablecoin reserves in this way illegally enriches the head of state and fosters unfairness in the sector.

Should the allegations prove true, they will highlight the dangers of state actors gaining personal or political advantage through crypto infrastructure, says the host of Incrypted. For his part, Greenberg argues that such actions are an affront to fair competition and the integrity of the digital asset market.

Industry Response and Broader Implications

Circle, issuer of USDC, has been at pains to distance itself from its shareholder over the matter, stating that the suit is Greenberg’s own initiative. He remains firm, saying the legal action is intended to stop further illegal crypto activity and to protect the interests of the USDC issuer.

It is possible the lawsuit will establish a new standard in the regulation and scrutiny of government officials’ crypto involvement, according to Incrypted. If Greenberg can substantiate his claims, expect to see more transparency demanded of prominent figures and state actors in their transactions, and tighter oversight to follow. Either way, the case will play a role in the ongoing discourse over global financial regulation, political influence, and digital assets.
