Major Tech Companies Lose Hundreds of Billions in Market Cap

With Alphabet’s market cap down $500 billion and Intel shares in a 23% freefall, the tech industry is writing off billions. The severity of the decline has reverberated through the crypto and conventional markets alike, raising fears of a wider financial contagion.

Alphabet, Intel, and Amazon Lead Market Downturn

It was a bad day for Google’s parent company on October 29; following a 13% slide in its stock, Alphabet was left with about $500 billion less in market capitalization. Pro Blockchain Media Live reports that such a loss is indicative of a sell-off that has hit the sector hard overall. Other big names have taken a beating too: Amazon posted a 7% drop in extended trading and Intel saw its shares nosedive 23%. Even in China, AI outfits like Minimax and Jipu have been hit hard, their valuations falling more than 80% from their peaks, erasing an estimated $150 billion of value between them.

High Innovation Costs Fuel Investor Anxiety

Investors are being put off by the expense of innovation, as guests on Pro Blockchain Media Live point out. While major tech firms make no secret of pouring money into data centers and next-generation chips to dominate the AI and computing space, there is growing restlessness in the market for a return on those outlays. Doubts about whether the spending will be recouped quickly are behind the sharp corrections and volatility seen in the sector.

Crypto Markets at Risk Amid Tech Stock Sell-Off

There is also a tendency for the link between equities and crypto to strengthen when panic takes hold of the stock market. To cover losses in their stock portfolios, some investors will have to do the same with their crypto, Pro Blockchain Media Live says, which can set off a wave of sell orders. Speculative altcoins and AI tokens are vulnerable to this kind of pressure since they are valued more on potential than on fundamentals. Should crypto traders get margin called or otherwise be compelled to liquidate, it will only add to the downward pressure on prices.

In short, the interdependence of the two markets is plain to see. When tech is shedding billions, the consequences are not confined to Silicon Valley; they translate into greater risk and volatility for the crypto markets.
