Chinese Hackers Target iOS Devices via Vietnamese Streaming Sites

Through Vietnamese streaming sites that offer TV shows and movies free of charge, Chinese hackers are making inroads into iOS devices. The security of millions of users is at risk as a result of this well-crafted operation, which gives cybercriminals the means to access sensitive data.

Malware Spreads Through Vietnamese Streaming Platforms

The DOUBLETOP Now channel has reported that these hackers have turned to iOS by targeting some of the more popular Vietnamese CMS platforms, with Ofim and KKPHim being two examples. Malicious JavaScript has been introduced into these systems where they host free content; an infected site will execute the code when the user visits, resulting in a data breach without any obvious signs.

This is not your run-of-the-mill phishing. The JavaScript allows for the collection of all kinds of personal details: from SMS and contacts to call logs, location, Wi-Fi passwords, photos, notes, and calendar entries. The extent of what can be taken is cause for alarm in cybersecurity circles.

Crypto Wallets Specifically Targeted

And it is not only personal information that the campaign is after. The malware is designed to search through the keychain storage on iOS for seed phrases and other details of crypto wallets such as BitGet, Phantom, ToneKeeper, TrustWallet, or OKEx, as DOUBLETOP Now reports. For anyone involved with cryptocurrency, this is a threat to digital assets as much as to privacy.

There is a precedent for this approach in a toolkit that Google’s security team discovered, which was first used by state actors in their operations against iOS before independent hacker groups obtained it. Seeing such advanced tools used for criminal purposes is a troubling development in the evolution of cyber threats.

Attack Limited to Older iOS Versions

However, there is something to be said for having an up-to-date device. The vulnerability in question is limited to those using an iOS version prior to 17.2.1, so the latest releases are safe from it. This is a clear example of the importance of updating, says DOUBLETOP Now. In the privacy and security settings of iOS, experts recommend enabling Lockdown Mode. It is an added safeguard against any exploit, particularly for those who use third-party or streaming sites.
