Chinese Prosecutors Seize Over 61,800 Bitcoin in $5.7B Fraud Case

In what is being regarded as one of the most far-reaching anti-fraud actions in China, prosecutors have seized $5.7 billion in Bitcoin. The seizure is part of an effort to put an end to an unlicensed scheme that has left some 102,000 investors defrauded.

Details of the Massive Bitcoin Seizure

Chinese prosecutors’ decision to take possession of more than 61,800 Bitcoin follows a wide-ranging probe of a wealth management firm run on fraudulent pretenses. CoinDesk reports that from 2014 through 2017, the operation took funds from over 102,000 investors who were unaware of the deception. The money was not invested in the legitimate ventures the operators had promised; instead, it was siphoned off for Bitcoin and such indulgences as fine jewelry, cars, and luxury property. When the authorities intervened, the digital assets were worth a cool $5.7 billion.

Global Crackdown on Crypto Fraud

The scale of the case is remarkable, as is the intricacy of a scam that was able to go on for years undetected. It is a reminder of the potential for large-scale abuse of cryptocurrencies and why oversight is being strengthened by authorities around the world.

But China is by no means the only country taking action. U.S. agencies have frozen $833 million in crypto linked to fraud and shut down 503 bogus websites. A good deal of the criminal activity can be attributed to ‘pig butchering’ centers in places like Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia, according to CoinDesk. Such coordinated law enforcement is all the more necessary given that these scams use convoluted digital footprints and cross borders with ease.

Market Impact and Investor Reactions

All this comes at a time of renewed appetite for Bitcoin investment products. SoSoValue figures put institutional inflows into Bitcoin ETFs at above a billion dollars for the week, yet analysts say the average daily investment has been a modest $86 million since July, nothing like the historic bull runs. Institutional confidence may be back, but there is no sign of a major rally in the market.

S&P Global Ratings are also looking to assuage fears over the safety of assets with a vault risk assessment for the digital asset space. The new offering, which experts at CoinDesk say provides needed transparency to institutions, is meant to help them identify the risks of on-chain investing and address them.
