There was talk earlier in June of Kraken negotiating for a 15 percent equity position in Aave Group, according to CoinDesk. But this latest news is about PayWord investing in Aave tokens and nothing more; no equity deal is currently in progress. It is a strategic way for PayWord to have a say in governance and gain exposure to DeFi protocols without the need for corporate ownership.<\/p>\n
PayWord\u2019s action can be seen as part of a trend among institutions to establish themselves in crypto infrastructure and DeFi. Standard Chartered\u2019s venture division and Japan\u2019s SBI Group are cases in point: they have invested in Soter, the crypto insurer, bringing its total support to $23.5 million and about 500 Bitcoin and 2,000 Ether (around $66 million). Soter offers policies that pay out in the cryptocurrency deposited to cover any software failure or theft, a service in demand as bigger names enter DeFi.<\/p>\n
These are the kinds of steps established financial institutions are taking to gain a foothold in the decentralized world, whether through Aave-type tokens or by backing insurance and infrastructure.
