Even a dozen years on from the 2014 implosion of MTGOX, its hack has left an indelible mark on the crypto industry. Unfinished business in the form of lawsuits and client payouts that have yet to be made are a testament to how the exchange\u2019s legacy bears on trust and the regulation of digital assets.<\/p>\n
In its heyday, MTGOX was pre-eminent among cryptocurrency exchanges, accounting for some 70 percent of Bitcoin traffic. Yet it all started to unravel after a series of calamitous hacks in 2011. The first saw 80,000 bitcoins taken from the hot wallet, a sum of $68,000 then (the equivalent of $7 billion now). A further 25,000 were stolen later that year, worth $400,000. Then there was the theft of 77,500 bitcoins, or roughly $451 million at the time; the perpetrators were thorough in erasing their digital trail, and the loss did not come to light until 2015, long after the doors had closed. Incrypted channel reports say such incidents laid bare what early platforms were prone to and, in doing so, established security standards for the future.<\/p>\n
But the fallout from the MTGOX hack was not over when the exchange went under in 2014. Mark Karpeles, who ran MTGOX, was convicted of obscuring the extent of the losses and falsifying the books, though he escaped charges for the bitcoin thefts themselves. In the ensuing legal wrangle, Nobuaki Kobayashi of Japan was appointed as asset trustee.<\/p>\n
When Kobayashi set about liquidating some of the recovered bitcoin in 2017, it proved costly for creditors given the effect on market prices. To date, only 19,500 have been paid in part; the other 20% of creditors are still in limbo. What is viewed by many as an inefficient and convoluted process has meant the deadline for payouts has been pushed back no fewer than five times, to October 31, 2027.<\/p>\n
One could call the MTGOX saga a cautionary tale for the crypto world. It is a case in point of the risks of poor security and the protracted frustration a creditor can endure in the wake of a breach.
