With the unveiling of their post-quantum security and privacy agenda, Zcash’s quantum resistance has been put in the spotlight by developers Sean Bowe and Dave Oja. The Tachyon project is part of their forward-looking plans to put the network beyond the reach of quantum threats and improve its scalability.<\/p>\n
The developers at Zcash say that as artificial intelligence has made inroads, so too has the imperative for strong privacy. AI tools are increasingly capable of identifying and tracking cryptocurrency users, which makes quantum resistance a matter of real importance. What they want is for Zcash to provide absolute, not merely relative, privacy; transactions will be rendered indistinguishable from random data in order to thwart any analysis, whether from AI or quantum methods.<\/p>\n
Tachyon is central to how Zcash intends to address such threats and questions of scale. On Bankless, Bowe and Oja have discussed how the project will prevent the growth of the nullifier set and make transaction sizes smaller, removing two impediments to the network\u2019s long-term use. They aim to increase throughput to 100 megabytes per second and reduce block sizes in the process, an efficiency gain that should pave the way for mass adoption.<\/p>\n
Then there is Private Information Retrieval (PIR), to be implemented by Zcash to give users a better experience. With PIR, one does not have to download as much data to verify a balance, which simplifies wallet operations and opens up the network.<\/p>\n
All of this is underpinned by three things: post-quantum soundness, privacy, and quantum recoverability. The developers are eager to have every transaction on the network conform to post-quantum standards before next year is out, putting in place new algorithms for double-spend protection and to defend against quantum attacks. To fortify security, they are also turning to formal verification. The mathematical proofs of protocol safety that this yields are meant to rule out any latent vulnerabilities and make Zcash a dependable bulwark against whatever cryptographic threats may come.<\/p>\n
