An hour was all it took for Da City Coin, the meme token from the GTA 6 trailer, to surge 2900% and reach a market capitalization of $3.18 million. The impetus for such an extraordinary rally was an Easter egg that fans uncovered in Rockstar Games’ newest Grand Theft Auto 6 preview.

On October 15, with the release of the long-awaited trailer, there was a telling Easter egg in plain sight: “Da City Coin” on the side of a biplane. Pro Blockchain Media Live says the fleeting exposure was enough to make the otherwise unremarkable token a crypto talking point. It had made its debut on October 11 to little fanfare from the community or traders.

Once the trailer was out, the token’s market cap went from a modest $104,000 to $3.18 million in short order. Around 24 traders were quick to take advantage of the fervor and walk away with more than $10,000 each, according to Pro Blockchain Media Live. A $1,900 stake became $44,000 for one trader, if only temporarily; later volatility would cost him 53 percent of his profit.

Any suggestion of an official tie between Rockstar Games and Da City Coin should be put to rest. There is no endorsement from the developer behind the game; the token’s ascent has been entirely due to viral enthusiasm and community speculation.

Then again, what Da City Coin has done is nothing new. One can look to the DealBits token for a parallel, which ran up to a $5 million market cap after being mentioned in a Fortnite Easter egg before losing 96 percent of that value, as Pro Blockchain Media Live reports. In the end, the Da City Coin affair is just the latest illustration of how pop culture can trigger a huge, if ephemeral, spike in a speculative crypto asset.
