In a bold undercover operation, a detective infiltrated a Chinese syndicate that was running a money laundering ring for the Lazarus Group\u2019s North Korean hackers on a scale of over $1 billion. It was a case of global cybercrime with real risks and real money at stake, and one that would lead to the unmasking of what is arguably the biggest illegal crypto scheme so far.<\/p>\n
The whole affair came to light in the wake of the Bybit exchange breach in February, when $1.5 billion was stolen by hackers, causing quite a stir in the crypto world. Incrypted reports that in the aftermath of such a high-profile heist, a detective went into the field to follow the trail of the missing money.<\/p>\n
He did not hold back; the detective immersed himself in the criminal underworld, making contact with unsavory characters in clandestine chat rooms and putting up nearly $350,000 of his own money to gain their trust. To be seen as one of them and get inside the syndicate, he accepted a 5% loss on an exchange.<\/p>\n
Those he dealt with were candid in a way that was almost disarming. They would talk about hunting wild rabbits or a day at Disneyland, lending a casual air to their otherwise serious business.<\/p>\n
But behind the scenes, the syndicate was employing some of the most advanced techniques for laundering. The Incrypted report attributes this to their use of liquidity pools on decentralized exchanges and shuffling of stolen capital on the Tron and Solana blockchains, any of which would confound an investigator. And they were not above using sophisticated means to run millions through Bitcoin and Ethereum to muddy the waters, a testament to the kind of problem law enforcement faces these days.<\/p>\n
With the XBT project behind him, the detective was able to amass the sort of evidence that can make or break a case: wallet addresses, infrastructure data, and chat logs. He turned it all over to the authorities so they could mount an assault on the Asian network.<\/p>\n
It is proof, says Incrypted, of what can be achieved with blockchain analytics and good old-fashioned undercover work. In exposing this particular Chinese syndicate, there has been some progress in the wider war on crypto crime.<\/p>\n
