The hackers were after 103 million XRP ($387.5 million in value), an amount that accounted for about 84 percent of the user protection fund at BitGet (which was holding 5,500 BTC or $464 million). Cheeky Crypto reports that the perpetrators made off with the money by exploiting two third-party security products, not by obtaining any user private keys, thus sparing customers from a direct wallet theft.<\/p>\n
For a week after the incident, there were no XRP withdrawals from the platform. The market took note of the trouble and the fact that funds were locked up, and XRP\u2019s price saw a 2.7% dip.<\/p>\n
Some in the industry have been impressed with how BitGet handled the aftermath. It did not make its customers cover the $387.5 million shortfall but used company reserves instead. Internal funds were used to bring the user protection fund back to $300 million, and client accounts were not affected. The same could not be said for users of Mt. Gox or Bitfinex in the wake of their respective hacks, who were subject to losses or protracted bankruptcy, as Cheeky Crypto points out.<\/p>\n
What BitGet will not disclose are the particulars of how it divides up its reserves and user protection fund. Such opacity is enough to make one question the dependability of the security and protective measures in place.<\/p>\n
There is a lesson in the BitGet affair for crypto users to be more vigilant. The Cheeky Crypto episode makes the case that putting all one\u2019s faith in an exchange\u2019s protection fund is a risk; assets would be better diversified over several platforms to guard against the next hack or a failing exchange. A close reading of terms of service and attention to any changes to reserve and security policies is recommended. BitGet may still be publishing proof-of-reserves reports, but the degree of user protection is not what it was prior to the attack.
