Getting out is harder, because now real money is on the line. Position in profit? You're afraid of giving it back, so you're tempted to close everything at the first pullback. In the red? You want to wait for the price to come back. So many traders end up doing exactly the opposite of what they should: they cut their winners short and let their losers run. That's why an account can shrink even when more than half the trades are winners: the average loss ends up bigger than the average gain.

The fix sounds simple: decide on your exit before you hit Buy. At the moment of entry you're calm and can judge clearly where the idea stops working and how far the price could go. Later, emotions will cloud that picture. Write down three things: where your target is, where your stop is, and what event would make the trade pointless. Can't name even one of them? It may be too early to enter.

Term · R-multiple

A trade's result measured in units of the initial risk. If you risked 50 USDT and made 150, the result is 3R. It's a handy way to compare trades of different sizes.

Four reasons to close a position

Every exit comes down to one of four reasons. The first is that the price hit your target: a resistance level, a chart pattern's measured target or a risk-to-reward ratio you picked in advance. The second is that your stop-loss was triggered, capping the loss at an amount you knew from the start.

The third reason is less obvious: the trade idea broke. Say you bought expecting a breakout above a level, but the price slipped back below it and stayed there. Your stop is still far away, but there's no longer any reason to hold, and getting out now is usually cheaper than waiting for the stop. The fourth reason is time. You expected a move within a few days, but the price has gone nowhere for a week, and your money is stuck with nothing to show for it. Some traders give each trade a set lifespan in advance and close it once the time is up. This is especially useful if you trade intraday or over a few days: a stalled position keeps you on edge and stops you from seeing new opportunities.

Exit method

How it works

Who it suits

Take-profit at a level

The whole position closes at a set price

Traders who trade off levels and like simplicity

Partial profit-taking

The position closes in parts at several targets

Those who want to lock in profit and still ride the move

Trailing stop

The stop follows the price and closes the position on a pullback

Trend-following strategies

Exit when the idea breaks

The position closes when the entry scenario is invalidated

Anyone who writes down the reason for each trade

Time-based exit

The position closes after a set period

Short-term strategies

Partial profit-taking: taking gains in stages

Partial profit-taking resolves the main inner conflict: between the fear of missing out on profit and the fear of selling too early. You close part of the position at the first target and let the rest keep working. If the market turns, you've already banked part of the profit; if it keeps going, you're still in the game. Everyone picks their own proportions, but the scheme usually looks similar: a third closes at the first target, another third at the second, and the last third stays under a trailing stop. It's easy to set this up right after entry with several limit orders. The key is to choose the scheme in advance and not change it on the fly because of how the price is moving.

The method has a cost: in the strongest moves, you'll make less than if you'd held the full position. In return, your results are smoother and your decisions calmer. For most beginners, that's a good trade-off.

Before entering, set your stop and two or three targets based on chart levels.

Decide what share of the position you'll close at each target.

Place limit sell orders for each portion.

After the first target, move the stop on the remaining part to breakeven.

Manage the last portion with a trailing stop or close it when the idea breaks.

Example · A SOL trade step by step

A trader buys SOL, risking 4 percent to the stop. They sell half at the first target for a 4 percent gain and move the stop to breakeven. The other half gets closed by a trailing stop after the price runs further and then pulls back.

Trailing stops and breakeven

A trailing stop follows the price at a set distance and closes the position when the market pulls back. It's especially useful in strong trends, where you can't tell in advance where the move will end. The distance is chosen based on the coin's volatility: too tight and normal noise will knock you out. Calmer coins usually get a smaller distance, volatile altcoins a bigger one.

Moving your stop to breakeven means shifting it to your entry price once the trade is far enough in profit. After that, the worst outcome is zero rather than a loss, and holding the position becomes much easier psychologically.

But there's a trap: move the stop to breakeven too early, and the market will often hit it on an ordinary pullback, then head where you expected without you. As a rule, traders move the stop after the first partial exit or after the price has traveled a distance equal to the initial risk. Technically, both techniques rely on the orders covered in the lesson on order types.

How long-term investors should exit

If you hold crypto for years, the exit logic is different. Almost nobody has managed to call the top of a cycle, so investors swap guessing for rules. The most common one is rebalancing: you set target weights for the assets in your portfolio and bring them back to those targets from time to time.

Say crypto is meant to be a fifth of your savings, but after a strong rally its share has grown to a third. Rebalancing means selling the excess and bringing the share back down to where it started. In effect, you sell what has gone up on a regular basis, without trying to time the perfect moment. We cover how to structure your holdings in the lesson on building a crypto portfolio.

The second option is to sell in parts at price levels you picked in advance, or on a schedule, say once a month. It's the mirror image of buying on a regular schedule, and it lowers the risk of selling everything at a bad moment. You won't squeeze out the maximum profit this way, but you'll be spared the regret of having sold at the bottom.

Important · Don't forget about taxes

In many countries, selling or swapping crypto at a profit is taxable. The rules vary a lot and keep changing, so before you take a large profit, check the current requirements in your country or talk to a tax professional.

Mistakes when exiting a position

Almost every exit mistake has the same root: the plan changes mid-trade. The price gets close to your target, and you push the target further out because "it's about to take off." Or you lower your stop because "it's just noise." Either way, hope is making the call, not your plan.

Another common mistake is judging your exit rules by a single trade. You closed according to plan, the price ran another 20 percent, and now the plan feels wrong. But exit rules are tested over dozens of trades, not one. If they produce a positive result on average, one missed gain means nothing.

Finally, many traders never write down why they exited. Without that, you can't tell which exit method suits you. Add an exit-reason column to your trading journal (target, stop, broken idea or time), and within a month you'll see where you're losing the most.

Moving your target further away as the price gets close to it.

Moving your stop further from the price to "give the trade a chance."

Closing winning trades at the first pullback, against the plan.

Holding a losing position in the hope of getting back to breakeven.

Exiting because of someone else's opinion on social media instead of your own rules.

<circle cx="12" cy="12" r="9"/><circle cx="12" cy="12" r="5"/><circle cx="12" cy="12" r="1.5"/>

Lesson task

Before a BTC/USDT trade on a BuyCrypt demo account, write down three things: a target based on a chart level, a stop, and the event that would break your idea. Open the position and immediately set a stop-loss and take-profit at those levels, then don't move them: you may close manually only if the event you wrote down actually happens. After the exit, note the reason in your journal (target, stop, broken idea or time) and check whether it matched the plan.

Learn and earnFree tournaments every day — your way to USDT prizes

Entry is free and you trade on a demo account, so you need no money of your own. Chasing the perfect top usually ends with a noticeably smaller profit.

</details>
<details>

Should you close a position all at once or in parts?

Both approaches work. Closing all at once is simpler and gives you a more honest read on your strategy; closing in parts is easier on the nerves and lets you stay in a strong move. Try both on a demo account and go with the one you can actually stick to.

</details>
<details>

What should you do if the price keeps going after you exit?

Nothing. It's a normal part of trading. If you exited according to plan, you did everything right. Don't dwell on the profit you missed; check whether you followed your rules.

</details>
<details>

Should you move profits into stablecoins?

Many traders park their funds in stablecoins after taking profit so they aren't exposed to market swings. But stablecoins carry their own risks, tied to the issuer and to the platform where you hold them, so it's wise not to keep everything in one asset or in one place.

</details>

How to take profit in trading and investing: price targets, partial exits, trailing stops, breakeven stops, time-based exits and exiting when the idea breaks.

How to take profit in trading and investing: price targets, partial exits, trailing stops, breakeven stops, time-based exits and exiting when the idea breaks.
[16352

post-54362","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-crypto-school","resize-featured-image
["GET
