A professional sees a bet with a maximum loss that's known in advance. Pros accept that some of their trades will inevitably be wrong, and their goal is to make sure no single mistake, or even a whole string of them, knocks them out of the game.

The reason is simple math. Gains and losses aren't symmetrical: lose half your account and you have to double what's left just to get back to where you started. The deeper the drawdown, the more unrealistic the return you need to recover, and the stronger the urge to take even bigger risks. The table below shows how fast the required gain climbs.

That's why protecting your capital matters more than any idea, no matter how attractive. Missing a good trade is no big deal; the market will offer another one. Lose your account, though, and you lose the ability to trade at all.

Account drawdown

Gain needed to get back to even

10%

about 11%

20%

25%

30%

about 43%

50%

100%

75%

300%

90%

900%

Risk per trade and position size

One of the core rules: risk only a small, fixed share of your account on any single trade. The usual figure is one to two percent, and some professionals risk even less. The exact number matters less than the principle: even ten losing trades in a row shouldn't wipe out your account or derail your plan.

Here's the catch: position size and percentage risk are two different things. Risk is the amount you lose if your stop-loss gets hit. Position size is derived from that amount and the distance to your stop: the wider the stop, the smaller the position, and vice versa. That's how a pro can trade coins with very different volatility while risking the same amount on each. The formula is simple: divide your risk amount by the distance to your stop in percent. How to place the stop itself is covered in detail in the lesson on stop-losses.

Example · Sizing a position

Say your account holds 10,000 USDT and you risk 1 percent per trade, which is 100 USDT. You enter at 60,000 with a stop at 58,800, which is 2 percent below. Divide 100 by 0.02 and you get a position size of 5,000 USDT. If the stop is hit, you lose about 100 USDT, plus fees and slippage.

Daily, weekly and drawdown limits

A per-trade rule alone isn't enough, though. Big losses rarely come from one trade. They come from a streak, when a trader tries to win it back after a loss, sizes up and breaks their own rules. That's why professionals put limits on the account as a whole. Prop firms, which trade their own capital through hired traders, set a daily loss limit and a maximum overall drawdown; break either one and trading stops or access to the account is revoked. A retail trader should set the same kind of rules, but they only work if you write them down in advance and follow them with no exceptions.

Once you hit a limit, taking a break is a must. Not as punishment, but because a losing streak distorts how you see things: trades start to look obvious, stops seem unnecessary and your size feels too small. A night away from the screen lets you look at the market again without the urge to win your money back right now.

Daily limit: hit your set loss and you close the platform until tomorrow.

Weekly limit: once it's hit, trading goes on pause and you review your journal.

Size reduction: after several losing trades in a row, you cut your risk per trade in half.

Maximum drawdown: if the account falls below a set level, you stop trading until you've reviewed your system.

A cap on the number of trades per day, so you don't trade out of boredom.

Tip · Write your rules in advance

Limits you come up with in the middle of a losing day always turn out to be too flexible. Write them into your trading plan when things are calm, and if your platform allows it, set up automatic restrictions.

Total risk and correlation

Here's an example: five long positions in different altcoins, each risking one percent. It looks like a total risk of five percent spread across independent bets. But the crypto market is tightly linked: when bitcoin drops hard, altcoins follow, and all five stops can get hit within an hour.

A professional tracks not only the risk of each trade but also the total risk across all open positions, and groups similar trades together. If it's really one idea, say a bet on the whole market going up, the limit applies to the group as a whole. Sometimes risk is reduced with a hedge: you keep your long-term coins and, ahead of a major event, open an opposite position on part of that size.

A useful habit: before opening a new position, look at the ones you already have and picture what happens to all of them if the market crashes 10% in an hour. If the answer scares you, sit this one out.

Risks you won't see on the chart

The first of these is counterparty risk: the chance that the platform holding your money lets you down. The collapse of FTX in 2022 showed that even one of the largest exchanges can freeze withdrawals within days. That's why traders spread their funds across several platforms and keep only working capital on an exchange.

Liquidity dries up in small-cap coins and during panics: there's simply no one on the other side to buy, and your stop fills at a price far worse than the one you set. With leverage it's even more dangerous: a sharp wick can liquidate your position even if you end up being right about the direction. More on that in the lesson on margin trading.

There are technical risks too: leaked API keys, a dropped connection, a misconfigured bot. Create trading keys without withdrawal permissions and lock them to your IP address, and test any automation with small amounts first.

Important · Leverage doesn't change risk, it changes size

Your risk-per-trade rule still applies, even when leverage lets you open a position bigger than your account. The exchange will let you do it, but opening 50,000 USDT instead of the 5,000 your calculation calls for is a straight road to liquidation.

The process: plan, journal and review

For a professional, risk management is routine, not inspiration. Before a trade, they check it against the plan; during the trade, they never move the stop further into a loss; afterwards, they log the result and the reasons in a journal. Once a week or once a month, they go through the journal looking for recurring mistakes. Each entry records not just the price and the outcome but also whether the plan was followed. A losing trade that followed the rules is just part of the job, while a winning trade that broke them is a mistake. This trains you to stop judging decisions by random outcomes and, over time, exposes the weak spots in the system itself.

It makes sense to tie your trading to your overall financial plan: how much money goes to trading, when you withdraw profits, and at what drawdown you take a break. That's covered in the lesson on a trader's financial plan, and every risk control tool is collected in our complete risk management guide.

Does this trade have a reason that comes from my plan, not from the news feed?

Where is my stop, and how much do I lose if it's hit?

Have I already hit my daily limit or my total risk across open positions?

Does this trade essentially duplicate a position I already have?

Where will I take profit?

<circle cx="12" cy="12" r="9"/><circle cx="12" cy="12" r="5"/><circle cx="12" cy="12" r="1.5"/>

Lesson task

On a BuyCrypt demo account, assume you're risking 1% of your virtual balance. Then recalculate the size for a stop twice as far away: the position should be half as big, while the potential loss stays the same, about 1% of your balance.

Learn and earnFree tournaments every day — your way to USDT prizes

Entry is free and you trade on a demo account, so you need no money of your own. What matters is that your account can survive even ten losing trades in a row.

</details>
<details>

If I have a stop-loss in place, is my risk under control?

Not entirely. In a sharp move or thin liquidity, your stop can fill at a worse price than you set, and several related positions can all get stopped out at once.
