In this lesson we'll build that plan step by step, from your emergency fund to your rules for withdrawing profits. A financial plan looks at the bigger picture: where trading fits in your finances and in your life. Without one, even a well-tested strategy can end badly, for example if the money you'd set aside for rent ended up in your trading account.

Stories of people going broke rarely start with a bad trade. More often it comes down to blurry boundaries. Someone trades with part of their savings, adds more after a loss, then takes out a loan to win it back. Each step seems reasonable on its own, but together they add up to a disaster. A financial plan draws those lines in advance, while you're calm.

There's a flip side too: a plan keeps you from going off the rails after a win. A string of profitable trades makes you feel like you've cracked the market, and you're tempted to triple your size. Rules written in advance remind you that position size grows gradually along with your capital, not along with your mood.

This lesson pulls together what we've already covered in the risk management module: position size, stop-losses, diversification and handling emotions. The full set of rules is in the lesson "Risk Management: The Complete Guide"; here we'll turn those rules into your own personal numbers.

The foundation: what to have before your first deposit

Start with your own budget, not with an exchange. Add up your essential monthly expenses and set aside an emergency fund that covers several months of living costs, kept somewhere safe and easy to access. This money doesn't go into trading or into long-term crypto investments: its job is to bail you out if your income disappears.

Next, deal with expensive debt. The interest on a credit card or personal loan is a guaranteed loss that trading is unlikely to beat consistently. Paying off that kind of debt usually makes more sense than trying to outrun it in the market.

Only then should you decide on your trading capital: the amount you could lose without hurting your family, your home or your plans. Here's a simple test: imagine it went to zero tomorrow. If that thought alone keeps you up at night, the amount is too big.

Add up your essential monthly expenses.

Set aside an emergency fund covering several months of those expenses.

Pay off expensive debts or plan how you'll pay them off.

Split your remaining savings into long-term investments and trading capital.

Write down your trading capital amount and a rule that you never top it up to win back losses.

Important · No loans for trading

Borrowed money turns an ordinary drawdown into a debt you'll have to repay no matter what the market does. On top of that, the pressure of debt noticeably hurts your trading decisions.

Risk limits: per trade, per day, per month

You already know how to calculate risk on a single trade: it's the amount you'll lose if your stop-loss triggers, and it's usually kept to a small share of your capital. But that number alone isn't enough. Even good strategies have ten losses in a row, and your plan has to survive that.

So add drawdown limits. A daily limit means: if I lose this much in a day, I stop trading until tomorrow. A monthly limit means: if my drawdown for the month hits this level, I stop, go through my trading journal, and come back only on a demo account or with a smaller size. These rules protect you during the most dangerous phase, when losses make you want to trade more aggressively.

Also take a separate look at how your risk is spread across coins. Five open positions in altcoins that drop whenever bitcoin drops are really one big bet. So it's worth adding a concentration rule to your plan, based on what you learned about portfolio diversification.

The numbers in the table below are just an illustration, not a recommendation. Pick your own values to fit your strategy, how often you trade and how well you handle drawdowns.

Rule

Example value

What to do when it triggers

Risk per trade

1% of trading capital

Reduce position size or skip the entry

Daily loss limit

3% of capital

Close the trading terminal until the next day

Monthly drawdown limit

10% of capital

Pause, review your journal, come back with a smaller size

Maximum open positions

3 at a time

Don't open new ones until current ones are closed

Share of a single coin

No more than a third of capital

Rebalance according to your diversification plan

Example · What it looks like in money

Say your trading capital is 2,000 USDT and you risk 1% per trade: your stop-loss should cap the loss at roughly 20 USDT. If the chart puts your stop further away, shrink the position instead of moving the stop.

Goals: process instead of promised returns

A goal like "double my account this quarter" is motivating, but it pushes you toward extra risk: if you're not there by the halfway point, you're tempted to add leverage. The market doesn't owe you opportunities on your schedule, which is why money goals work poorly in trading.

Process goals are far more useful. For example: every trade has its entry, stop and target written down in advance; you didn't break your daily limit once all month; your journal covers every trade; you've made at least thirty demo trades with a new strategy before putting real money on it. Goals like these are entirely in your hands, and over time they're exactly what shows up in your results.

If you want a return benchmark, treat it as a hypothesis to test, not a commitment. At the very least, compare your strategy's results with simply holding bitcoin over the same period: if active trading keeps falling behind, it's time to rethink your approach.

Tip · Metrics worth tracking

Besides total profit, track your win rate, average loss, average profit and maximum drawdown. These numbers show you right away what to work on.

Profits, withdrawals and taxes

Until you withdraw your profit, it sits on the exchange at risk. Decide in advance how you handle profits: for example, once a month you move part of your gains out of your trading account and leave the rest to grow your capital. Otherwise, you can give back to the market in a couple of weeks everything you made in a good year.

Keep records of all your trades, deposits and withdrawals, with dates and amounts. In many countries, income from crypto is taxed, but the rules vary a lot: some tax every trade, others only when you cash out to regular currency. Check the current rules in your country; the general principles are covered in the lesson on taxes on cryptocurrency.

Review the whole plan once a quarter. If your income has changed, you've taken on new obligations, or your trading capital has grown or shrunk, it's time to update the numbers. A plan that hasn't changed in a year probably no longer reflects your real situation.

A one-page plan template

A good financial plan fits on one page and takes a minute to read. You won't open a ten-page document at the moment you need it most: after a losing streak or in the middle of a market rally. Print your plan or pin it in your phone's notes next to your exchange app.

Fill in the items on the list below with your own numbers and wording. Be specific: not "I trade carefully," but "risk per trade no more than 20 USDT." A vague rule is easy to break without even noticing.

After a month, compare your plan with your trading journal. If you kept breaking a particular rule, figure out why: maybe it's too strict for your strategy, or maybe that's exactly where your main problem is hiding.

The size of your emergency fund and where it's kept.

The amount of your trading capital and where top-ups come from.

Risk per trade as a percentage and in USDT.

Daily and monthly loss limits and what you do when they trigger.

Process goals for the coming month.

Your profit withdrawal rule and how often you withdraw.

How and where you keep records for taxes.

The date of your next plan review.

<circle cx="12" cy="12" r="9"/><circle cx="12" cy="12" r="5"/><circle cx="12" cy="12" r="1.5"/>

Lesson task

Fill in the template from the last section with your own numbers: emergency fund, trading capital, risk per trade as a percentage and in USDT, daily and monthly limits, and your profit withdrawal rule. Then test your plan with one question: if your trading capital went to zero tomorrow, could you calmly pay all your essential expenses next month? If not, reduce your capital instead of putting the plan off.

Learn and earnFree tournaments every day — your way to USDT prizes

Entry is free and you trade on a demo account, so you need no money of your own.
