It depends on how much you're storing, which networks you use and how often you move funds. We'll compare hardware wallets like Ledger and Trezor with software wallets like MetaMask, Phantom and Tonkeeper, look at how to store your recovery phrase, and see where people most often lose money. There are no coins in the app or on the device: they're recorded to your address on the blockchain. What the wallet actually holds is a private key, the secret that gives you control over that address. Lose the key and its backup, and your access is gone. If someone else gets hold of the key, they can drain everything.

That's why wallets are sorted along two lines. The first is who holds the key. With a custodial wallet, such as an exchange account, the company holds the keys and you just have an account. With a non-custodial wallet, the keys are yours alone. The second is whether the key is connected to the internet. A hot wallet lives on your phone or in your browser, while a cold wallet keeps the key on a separate device or on paper.

We covered the basics in the lesson on how to create a crypto wallet. This time we'll go further: compare specific tools and build a storage setup that will serve you well past the beginner stage.

Term · Recovery phrase

A set of 12 or 24 words generated along with your wallet. These words let you restore all your keys in any compatible app. It's also called a seed phrase or mnemonic.

Hardware wallets: Ledger, Trezor and others

A hardware wallet is a small device that generates your key and keeps it inside. When you send funds, your computer or phone only prepares the transaction; the device itself signs it after you check the address on its screen and press a button. Even if your computer is infected, malware can't get to the key.

Ledger is one of the best-known brands. The lineup includes the Nano S Plus, the Bluetooth-enabled Nano X, and the Stax and Flex with E Ink screens. The key sits in a secure chip, and you manage your coins through the Ledger Live app. The company has drawn criticism more than once for its closed-source firmware and for Ledger Recover, an opt-in service that stores an encrypted backup of your phrase with third-party companies.

Trezor takes the opposite approach and bets on open source: any expert can audit its firmware and software. There are the older One and Model T and the newer Safe series with a secure chip. Other notable devices include the Bitcoin-only Coldcard, which can work without ever connecting to a computer; Keystone, which passes data through QR codes; and Tangem, an NFC card the size of a bank card.

Wallet

Type

Networks

Best for

Ledger

Hardware

Thousands of coins and tokens

Long-term storage of large amounts across networks

Trezor

Hardware, open source

Major networks, broad support

People who want auditable code

Coldcard

Hardware

Bitcoin only

Storing Bitcoin with maximum isolation

MetaMask

Software, extension and app

Ethereum and compatible networks

Using dApps and DeFi

Phantom

Software

Solana and several other networks

The Solana ecosystem

Tonkeeper

Software

TON

Payments and apps in the TON ecosystem

Electrum

Software, desktop

Bitcoin only

Experienced Bitcoin users

Important · Buy only from the manufacturer

A secondhand device, one bought on a marketplace, or one that arrives with a slip of paper listing words may have been tampered with. A genuine wallet never comes with a ready-made recovery phrase: you create it yourself during setup.

Software wallets: MetaMask, Phantom, Tonkeeper

A software wallet is a phone app or a browser extension. The key is stored on the device itself, in encrypted form. That's convenient: a transfer takes seconds, and you can use dApps right from your browser. But the convenience has a price: if your phone or computer is infected, your key is at risk.

MetaMask is the best-known wallet for Ethereum and compatible networks such as Arbitrum, Base and BNB Chain, and it's how most people connect to dApps on those networks. Phantom started out in the Solana ecosystem and has gradually added other networks. Tonkeeper is a popular non-custodial wallet for TON. Trust Wallet and Exodus support many networks at once, and Electrum has been the go-to desktop Bitcoin wallet for years.

The wallet built into Telegram deserves a separate mention: some of its features are custodial, meaning the service holds your funds, and for full control you need to set up a separate non-custodial account. Whatever wallet you pick, find out who holds the keys before you start using it.

How to store your recovery phrase

You can lose a hardware wallet, break it or drop it in water, and it's no disaster as long as your recovery phrase is safe: buy a new device and restore access. But if someone else sees the phrase, no chip will save you. So treat it as seriously as the keys to a safe.

For large amounts, there are extra layers of protection. A passphrase adds one more word to your 12 or 24, a kind of "25th word" that you memorize or store separately, and it opens a completely different set of addresses. Multisig requires several keys to approve a transfer, say two out of three, so losing any one key or having it stolen won't cost you your funds.

Test your backup right after you create the wallet. Many hardware devices can check the phrase without sending any funds, and a software wallet can be restored on a second device as a test while it's still empty. Better to catch a miswritten word today than three years from now, when the device stops working.

Write the phrase by hand on paper or stamp it onto a metal plate.

Never photograph it or keep it in notes, email or the cloud.

Keep copies in two secure places in case of fire or flood.

Don't enter the phrase on any website, and never read it out to "support".

Decide in advance how your family will get access if something happens to you.

A storage setup that fits your needs

It's more useful to think about a set of wallets than a single one. The money you trade with sits on the exchange, but no more than you need. Spending money and funds for trying out dApps go in a hot wallet. Long-term savings go in a hardware wallet that you connect to websites as rarely as possible.

The exchange part of your setup needs its own protection: two-factor authentication through an app rather than SMS, a whitelist of withdrawal addresses, and a separate email for crypto services. The lesson on security on a crypto exchange covers all of this in detail. The one thing to remember here: an exchange is a place to trade, not a vault for your savings.

A separate hot wallet for new apps will spare you a lot of trouble: if you sign a malicious approval, only a small amount is at stake. How these apps work and why they call for caution is explained in the lesson on decentralized apps.

The weakest link isn't the technology at all. Scammers send emails posing as the manufacturer, publish fake apps in app stores, plant look-alike addresses in your transaction history, or use malware to swap an address you've copied. After Ledger's customer database leaked in 2020, device owners got phishing emails for years, and some even received packages with fake wallets, although the devices themselves were never hacked. You'll find more on these schemes in the lesson on how to spot scam projects.

Work out how much you're holding long term and how much you need for transactions.

For long-term storage, buy a hardware wallet from an official seller.

Create your recovery phrase and make two physical copies.

Install one hot wallet for everyday transfers and a separate one for dApps.

Before every transfer, check the whole address on the device screen, not just the first few characters.

Tip · Test transfer

When you send a large amount to a new address, send a small part first and make sure it arrives. Then remove the wallet from the app (or grab a second device) and restore it from the words you wrote down: the address should match the original. Don't send anything to it.
