Picture a store: one aisle has gold bars, another has tools, a third has gift cards, and there are lottery tickets by the checkout. It all costs money, but people buy each item for different reasons.

Coins are the same. Some are meant to replace money, others serve as fuel for programs on a blockchain, some are a digital twin of the dollar, and others started as a joke that unexpectedly turned into a market. Once you know which shelf a coin sits on, it's easier to judge what you can expect from it and what you can't.

Below we'll go over the most recognizable examples. This isn't a ranking or a shopping list but a map of sorts: what each coin is for and where its weak spots are.

Term · Coin vs. token

A coin usually means a blockchain's native currency, such as BTC on the Bitcoin network or ETH on the Ethereum network. A token is issued on top of someone else's network: USDT exists on several blockchains at once, while PEPE runs on Ethereum.

Bitcoin: the first cryptocurrency and digital gold

Bitcoin (BTC) was introduced to the world in 2009 by a person or group using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. The idea was simple: money you can send over the internet without a bank, and that nobody can print beyond what the rules allow. There will never be more than 21 million bitcoins, and that rule is hard-coded into the network.

The network is secured by miners: they spend electricity on computations, and this mechanism is called Proof of Work. Roughly every four years, the reward for finding a block is cut in half, an event known as the halving. That's why new bitcoins are created at an ever slower pace.

Bitcoin isn't great for everyday spending: transfers on the main network take minutes, and the fee depends on how busy the network is. On the other hand, it has the longest track record, the largest network and enormous trust from the market. That's why people are far more likely to hold bitcoin as digital gold than to pay for coffee with it.

Platforms: Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain and TON

Ethereum (ETH) launched in 2015, and Vitalik Buterin was among its founders. If Bitcoin is like a calculator that can only move money, Ethereum is more like a computer: you can run programs on it called smart contracts. They power exchanges without middlemen, lending services, NFTs and thousands of other tokens. You need ETH to pay the network a fee for every action.

In 2022, Ethereum dropped mining in favor of Proof of Stake: the network is now secured not by graphics cards but by participants who lock up their coins as collateral. Unlike Bitcoin, ETH has no hard supply cap. At peak hours, Ethereum's main network can get expensive, so a lot of activity has moved to layer 2 networks such as Arbitrum, Optimism and Base.

Solana (SOL) bets on speed and sub-penny fees, hence its huge trading volumes and countless memecoins. The price for this has been reliability: in its early years, the network went down several times. BNB is tied to the Binance exchange and the BNB Chain network, while TON grew out of a Telegram project and is now developed by an independent community, with a TON wallet built right into the messenger.

Coin

Launch year

Main role

What to watch out for

Bitcoin (BTC)

2009

Savings, digital gold

21 million coin cap; slow and sometimes expensive transfers

Ethereum (ETH)

2015

Smart contract platform

Main network fees; much of the activity has moved to layer 2 networks

Solana (SOL)

2020

Fast, cheap network

Has suffered network outages in the past

BNB

2017

Binance and BNB Chain ecosystem

Heavy dependence on a single company

XRP

2012

International transfers

Ripple holds a large share of the coins

Toncoin (TON)

2020

Payments and apps in Telegram

Strong reliance on a single messenger

Stablecoins: the dollar on the blockchain

A stablecoin is a token whose price is pegged to a regular currency, most often the US dollar. The best-known ones are Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC. Such a token aims to be worth exactly one dollar, and the issuing company promises to back it with reserves: cash and short-term government bonds.

On a crypto exchange, stablecoins work like regular cash at a currency exchange booth. Coin prices are quoted in USDT, trades are closed in USDT, and traders move into stablecoins when they want to sit out a market drop. They're also handy for moving money between exchanges: on TRON or Solana, it's usually cheap and takes minutes.

You can't profit from a stablecoin going up; that's not what it was built for. The main risk here is trust in the issuer: if the reserves fall short or get frozen, the dollar peg can break. On top of that, the issuer can block tokens at a specific address if the authorities demand it.

Important · Not all stablecoins are created equal

Some stablecoins are backed by dollar reserves, while algorithmic ones hold their price through clever mechanics. In 2022, Terra's algorithmic UST lost its dollar peg and became almost worthless, dragging billions of dollars of investors' money down with it.

Payment coins and memecoins

XRP was created for fast international transfers between banks and payment companies. A transfer on its network takes seconds and costs a fraction of a cent. But XRP is surrounded by controversy: Ripple owns a large share of the coins, and the company spent several years in court with the US regulator, the SEC. Litecoin (LTC) appeared in 2011 as a faster copy of Bitcoin and is still used for payments.

Memecoins are a different story. Dogecoin (DOGE) was launched in 2013 as a joke about the crypto craze, with a Shiba Inu dog as its logo. The joke stuck, the coin built a huge community, and its price has spiked more than once after celebrity posts. PEPE came out in 2023 as a token on the Ethereum network and also runs on internet culture.

There's usually no product or revenue behind memecoins; the price is driven by attention and crowd mood. That's why they rise faster than anything else on a wave of hype and fall just as fast once interest fades. Hundreds of new memecoins appear every day, and many are created just so their founders can dump their share on gullible buyers.

Example · How to size up an unfamiliar coin

Spotted a new token in an exchange listing? Ask three questions: which network was it issued on, what is it for besides speculation, and who holds most of the coins? If there's no answer to the second question, you're most likely looking at a memecoin.

How to choose which coins to study next

As a beginner, you don't need to know every coin. A solid grasp of four groups is enough: Bitcoin, the major platforms, stablecoins and memecoins. Almost any new coin fits into one of them or is a mix of several, and from there you can dig into the details.

Popularity doesn't guarantee reliability. A coin can be on everyone's lips because of a scandal or an ad campaign, while another quietly does its job for years without making headlines. To compare coins by size, check out our lesson on the largest cryptocurrencies by market cap, and brush up on terms like blockchain, key and fee in the lesson on key concepts.

Before you buy anything, run through the short checklist below. It won't replace proper analysis, but it will keep you from making the most common beginner mistakes.

Figure out which group the coin belongs to and why it exists.

Find out which network it runs on and which wallet you'd store it in.

Check how long the coin has been trading and on which major exchanges.

Find out who holds most of the coins: the team, funds or a broad base of people.

Decide in advance how much you're prepared to lose if the price falls.

<circle cx="12" cy="12" r="9"/><circle cx="12" cy="12" r="5"/><circle cx="12" cy="12" r="1.5"/>

Lesson task

Open the rankings on CoinGecko or CoinMarketCap and pick five coins from the top 100 that you've never heard of. If you can't find an answer to "what is it for besides speculation," write that down too: that's already a conclusion.

Learn and earnFree tournaments every day — your way to USDT prizes

Entry is free and you trade on a demo account, so you need no money of your own. Bitcoin has the longest track record and the largest network, so among volatile coins it's considered the least risky. Stablecoins are more stable in price, but they depend on the issuer's honesty.

</details>
<details>

How is Bitcoin different from Ethereum?

Bitcoin was built primarily to store and transfer value, and there will never be more than 21 million coins. Ethereum is a platform for programs and tokens, where ETH serves as fuel for transactions. They also secure their networks differently: Bitcoin uses mining, Ethereum uses staked coins.

</details>
<details>

Can you get rich on memecoins?

Stories of coins going up a hundredfold do exist, but you hear far less about the people who lost money on them. A memecoin lives only as long as it gets attention, and its price can crash within hours. If you do buy memecoins, only put in an amount you can comfortably afford to lose.

</details>
<details>

Is USDT a cryptocurrency or a dollar?

USDT is a crypto token issued by Tether that aims to be worth one dollar. It runs on blockchains and is sent like any cryptocurrency, but it isn't a bank dollar and it isn't insured by any government.

</details>

Popular cryptocurrencies explained simply: Bitcoin, Ether, stablecoins, Solana, XRP, TON and memecoins.
