An inquiry into the losses at CryptoBillis is under way at Ledger, prompted by reports from the Asian reseller’s clientele of funds going missing over a 90-day period. For the time being, the company has put a stop to any sales or shipments of its devices through CryptoBillis while it conducts its investigation.

The matter came to a head with unexplained depletions of funds reported by more than one user who had obtained a Ledger device from the reseller. In the wake of that, Ledger has called an end to business via this channel. The company says the problem is confined to those who have made a purchase from CryptoBillis in the last three months.

On Pro Blockchain Media Live, the hosts spoke of the urgency surrounding the case and how Ledger is moving quickly to forestall any more such occurrences and protect its users. They pointed out the guidance issued by Ledger for those customers impacted: do not proceed with initialization if a device has been bought from CryptoBillis and is as yet unconfigured. If a wallet has already been put in service through the reseller, the company insists that assets be moved to a new hardware wallet of verified provenance and a recovery phrase be set up from scratch.

The root cause of the missing money is as yet unknown, the Pro Blockchain Media Live hosts emphasized, but Ledger has made it clear that its own infrastructure has not been compromised, leaving open the possibility of something amiss in the distribution process or with the reseller.

With the story in the spotlight, Ledger is cautioning against the opportunistic scams one might expect to see following the CryptoBillis affair; it is the firm’s advice to customers to never share their recovery phrases with unverified parties or on suspicious sites. The incident has been highlighted on Pro Blockchain Media Live as an example of what can go wrong with third-party resellers of hardware wallets. Industry commentators and Ledger alike maintain that the only prudent course in the crypto hardware market is to deal with the manufacturer directly.
