Galaxy Research reports that about 9,261 BTC from the U.S. Government, worth roughly $770 million, has been deposited with Coinbase Prime this week. This transfer has sparked debate over its origins and its significance for the crypto market.

The firm behind the report keeps a close watch on such movements; Galaxy Research conducts on-chain analysis of wallets belonging to government agencies. Their data shows that within two days, wallets linked to the U.S. government deposited 9,261 Bitcoin on Coinbase Prime. They are not the only ones to notice this activity: Arkham, a blockchain analytics firm, has separately recorded another $100 million in Bitcoin transactions, highlighting several large transfers from official wallets.

Much of the Bitcoin involved has a specific provenance. About half can be traced back to the Bitfinex hackers. Technically, the coins still belong to Bitfinex, but the matter of ownership and recovery remains unresolved, fueling speculation. There are also assets from Binance cases that have been held by law enforcement as part of efforts to seize crypto from high-profile incidents.

Some 2,456 of the Bitcoin, or $250 million, came from holdings not previously identified. Galaxy Research suggests these are new seizures or assets only recently linked to government enforcement. Altogether, it is a mixed collection that highlights the complexities of how the U.S. recovers and manages digital assets. For the crypto community, tracking these movements provides a clear view of what is happening with controlled or seized property. The analysts at Galaxy offer the kind of insight into price and sentiment that investors or traders seek before making decisions.

One might expect a large transfer of this scale to an exchange to put downward pressure on prices or spark fears of a sell-off. Yet the market has been oddly unresponsive. On-chain data supports Galaxy Research’s findings, showing no significant reaction. Some may assume any government transfer to an exchange means an immediate sale, but often it is for safekeeping or administrative purposes such as an auction. The market’s calm suggests investors have either already priced it in or do not expect the coins to be sold all at once.
