In a move that is as much about sustainability as it is technical, VoskCoin is leaving its Bitcoin mining roots to put down some in solar farming. The channel, which has made a name for itself with thorough cryptocurrency coverage, is now chronicling the process of going from running crypto rigs to erecting an actual solar power plant.

A new video from the host lays out the particulars of this change, including the use of Altair equipment for the panel installation. For a creator of VoskCoin’s stature, it is a considerable pivot. He describes it as a formidable challenge and a way to take a stand for more eco-conscious practices in the mining world. It is a logical step given the scrutiny traditional mining faces over its environmental footprint and dependence on the grid; by making the switch to solar, VoskCoin hopes to set an example for the rest of the community.

VoskCoin has turned to Altair for the hardware needs of its solar farm, deploying Canon Avalon and HammerMiner units for Bitcoin mining operations. The site is home to 400 solar panels on concrete mounts; by taking advantage of the albedo effect, the company is able to improve panel efficiency by 5 to 25 percent. All told, the configuration should yield about two megawatt-hours of electricity a day.

There was also a deliberate decision on VoskCoin’s part to source American equipment for the installation. You will find Integra racking and supports made of American aluminum in the system, a testament to their standards of quality as well as an intention to support domestic manufacturers.

VoskCoin has made no secret of the fact that this is their most ambitious and risky undertaking to date. And while the project has been an exciting and rewarding experience, one that the host says offers some instructive lessons for anyone looking to merge crypto mining with renewables, it has not been without its share of obstacles.

The Grow Watt inverters have been a case in point. The channel reports that they were anything but dependable, and the customer service left much to be desired, which in turn created all kinds of complications and put the setup behind schedule. It is a reminder of what can happen when you are trying to fit new technology into a complicated scheme and why the choice of equipment matters so much.
