Laptop meme coin, created by Unchained host Laura Shin, aims to satirize Donald Trump while empowering the crypto community. Despite its bold vision, the project faced major technical hurdles due to low liquidity, sparking debate about the true purpose and power of meme tokens.

According to Laura Shin, the launch of the laptop meme coin was driven by a desire to respond satirically to Donald Trump’s repeated claims of wanting to become the ‘crypto king.’ Shin, as the host of the Unchained podcast, emphasized that Trump’s involvement in crypto has been more damaging than beneficial. She argues that his approach, especially the ‘maximum extraction’ of money from devoted followers, has hurt the reputation and integrity of the broader crypto community.

By choosing the meme coin format, Shin sought not just to critique Trump but also to challenge the notion that meme coins must serve extractive or purely political purposes. The laptop meme coin was intended as an experiment in using viral internet culture for positive community-building and social engagement, rather than personal gain.

Upon its launch, the laptop meme coin project ran into serious liquidity issues. Instead of the anticipated 5 million tokens being funded, only 29,000 were actually invested. This insufficient liquidity led to extreme price volatility, with the coin’s market cap momentarily spiking to a fictitious $317 billion—an anomaly that quickly became a cautionary tale within the crypto space.

These technical setbacks not only disrupted the project but also prompted skepticism about the viability of meme coins as tools for social commentary. The incident highlighted the risks of underestimating the technical complexity behind even seemingly playful projects and underscored the need for adequate support and infrastructure.

Laura Shin’s vision for the laptop meme coin extends beyond satire. She believes meme tokens can act as unifying forces for communities and vehicles for social causes, rather than just being profit-driven or instruments of political influence. As she noted on Unchained, the crypto community has become increasingly dominated by the Trump administration and its associates, often to the detriment of crypto’s original ethos.

The choice of the name ‘Laptop’ was deeply intentional. Shin wanted to reclaim her own narrative and inspire younger generations who are frequently underestimated. By leveraging the reach and humor of meme coins, she hopes to demonstrate their potential to connect people and amplify positive social ideas, encouraging a more inclusive and creative use of blockchain technology.
