John Williams of the New York Fed has put to rest any notion of rate hikes in 2027, a pronouncement that was enough to put some pressure on the dollar and underpin a rally in Asian equities as the market took in the monetary policy picture.
Williams: No Rate Hikes Needed in 2027
While the New York Fed President was clear in a recent statement that 2027 will not call for higher rates, Williams did allow for the possibility of an increase later this year should economic conditions warrant it. This view is in keeping with the Federal Reserve’s efforts to balance managing inflation with fostering growth.
The CME FedWatch tool indicates that markets are not overly concerned about any near-term changes. The odds of a further hike in the current calendar year are put at 7.1% versus 0.8% for rates to hold steady. Even so, investors are likely to keep a close eye on what the Fed does next, mindful of the effect it can have on asset prices around the world.
Market Reaction: Dollar Drops, Asian Stocks Jump
There was no delay in the reaction from financial markets to Williams’ words. The US dollar weakened and stocks in Asia were buoyed by the idea of a steadier policy environment; CoinDesk noted the fewer expected rate hikes as a good omen for risk assets in the region. Some traders interpreted the New York Fed head’s comments as the Fed winding down its tightening cycle, a relief for markets weary of interest rate uncertainty.
Ripple and Standard Chartered Launch New Crypto Services
Elsewhere in the industry, Ripple has introduced new technology to let AI agents and apps operate without their own software and still open accounts, transact in crypto, and make payments. With X402 standards in place on the XRP blockchain, AI agents have been responsible for over 13 million transactions, or about a quarter of all network activity, Ripple says.
Standard Chartered has also made a move in the UAE, rolling out a crypto trading service for its high-net-worth clientele. No international bank has offered anything like it in the region before. It is a more straightforward way for clients to deal in digital assets, eliminating the need for third parties or their own wallets.
