Institutional adoption of cryptocurrency was the order of the day at the Bitcoin Treasuries Conference in New York. Lauren Asmus of UTXO Management made the point that where institutional investors once regarded Bitcoin as a speculative risk, they are now inclined to treat it as a capital asset.
Institutional Momentum Evident at Bitcoin Treasuries Conference
The conference served to highlight the accelerating pace of such adoption in the crypto space. “There is a shift in perspective among professional investors,” said Asmus, “who are coming to see Bitcoin as a dependable capital asset.” This marks a significant change from the previous view of Bitcoin as a volatile holding.
One could not miss the strong showing of Perpetual Preferred Equities’ Bitcoin Treasury, which has performed well. The recovery of their treasury after a difficult year for the markets is an indication of the confidence institutions have and will be seen as a model by others considering similar allocations.
Data-Driven Insights Bolster Bitcoin’s Institutional Case
To put numbers to it, Asmus says UTXO Management has a research report in the works. It will show that over the last ten years, a 2.5% allocation to Bitcoin would have added 200 basis points to portfolio returns with no additional volatility. In her view, the data makes a case for Bitcoin as a means of diversification that also improves performance. She also pointed out that when Bitcoin has been volatile, it has generally been on the way up, not down—an attribute that is hard to pass up for an investor looking for a hedge against inflation or market shocks.
New Products and Persistent Barriers
UTXO has introduced a new fund in structured credit to make the path to adoption easier. By using traditional instruments to gain Bitcoin exposure, these products are meant to connect conventional finance with developments in the crypto world.
Asmus did concede there are still hurdles for the institutional side, not least a lack of time to give Bitcoin the study it warrants and some educational gaps. But with the maturing of the infrastructure and more examples of success to reference, those are fading.
Looking Ahead: Bitcoin’s Evolving Role in Institutional Portfolios
Speakers at the conference were unanimous that Bitcoin will have a greater role to play in institutional portfolios. They stressed its value as a hedge against sovereign default and currency debasement, risks that are of greater concern in today’s economy. All in all, with major investors warming to the idea and investment products being put in place to suit them, the prospects for adoption are good. The message from the Bitcoin Treasuries Conference was that digital assets are being discussed in terms of long-term strategy, not speculation.
